What are relays?

Relays are electrically operated switches. It consists of a set of input terminals for single or multiple control signals, a set of operating contact signals, and a set of operating contact terminals. The switch can have any number of contacts in multiple contact forms, such as creating a contact, breaking a contract, or a combination of them. They are used to control one circuit by a separate low-power signal or to control multiple circuits with one signal. Relays were first utilizing as amplifiers in long-distance telegraph circuits. A simple electromagnetic relay is composed of a solenoid, which is a coil of wire around a soft iron core, an iron yoke that is short for magnetic flux, a movable iron frame, one or more sets of contacts, and Reluctance provides the path.

There are three main types of relays-

  • Electromechanical

An electromechanical relay consists of an electromagnetic coil and a mechanically movable contact. When the coil receives current, it creates a magnetic field, which attracts the moving contact, or armature. When the coil loses power, it loses its magnetic field, and a spring withdraws the contact. Mechanical relays can handle large amounts of current but are not as fast to switch on as other types of relays.

  • Solid – state relays

Solid-state relays are solid-state electronic components with no moving components, which increase their long-term reliability. They are generally the smallest relays and are also quicker to switch than other relays, and are therefore used for applications such as computer transistors.

  • Reed Relays

A reed relay consists of a reed switch and an electromagnetic coil. The switch is made up of two metal blades, also called reeds, and sealed in a glass tube filled with inert gas. When the coil receives current, the blades attract each other and form a closed path. They can switch faster than larger relays and require less voltage to function as a control circuit.

There are also some additional types of relays such as-
  • Coaxial relays
  • Time delay relays
  • And overload protection relays
What are relays used for?

Relays are switches that open and close circuit either electrically or electronically. Relays control electrical circuits by opening and closing contacts in another circuit. Relays are typically used to switch small currents in a control circuit and typically do not control power-consuming devices, except for small motors and Solenoids that draw low amps.

This can control large voltages and amperes by having an amplifying effect because a small voltage applied to the relay coil can result in a large voltage being switched off by the relay’s protecting contacts, thereby detecting electrical abnormalities and preventing equipment damage. Can be prevented, including over current, under current, overload, and reverse current.

Relays are widely used for switching starting coils, heating elements, pilot lights, and audible alarms.
